The Road So Far…
So I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, [pause for people to mention Eminem and city improvements] and lived there for the first two decades of my life. My father was a professor of Political Science, and my mother was my first creative mentor and muse. Both my parents instilled in me a thirst for knowledge, a love of radio plays and old Westerns, and a dedication to community development. I count myself lucky to have had the opportunity to meet influential leaders, scientists, and creatives before I learned how to ride a bike.**
My art career began back in Detroit. I ran a small writer’s blog and freelanced as a creative consultant for nonprofits and NGOs. My first jobs were at the Detroit Zoo, Pewabic Pottery, and N’Namdi Gallery—all great Detroit staples. Eventually, I worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in rural Vermont. For a couple of years, I put my art on hold to focus on serving ignored communities in the United States. Burnout led me to return to the Midwest, where I worked at a variety of Chicagoland organizations.
Eventually, I began working as a part-time (very small, kinda embarrassing) actress and screenwriter to supplement my income as an illustrator. Most notably, I illustrated the 20th Anniversary Special Edition of Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn. I also recently created the storyboard artwork for the award-winning political short film Stay, directed by Aden Gonzalez. I attended Oxford University [shoutout to my Tolkien-heads] for two-ish years to learn The Craft from our greatest writers. Currently, I have my first solo exhibition at Zhou B Art Center in Bridgeport, Chicago.
So what’s next? I don’t know. I’ve been married for less than a year. We’re just trying to save up for our cat’s bar mitzvah. I live in Logan Square, Chicago and love it here. I have a few things in the works, but you’ll have to stay tuned.
**Never learned… but I’m still young, okay? Also, if you’re looking to cast me- I’m a terrible driver.
